The Faculty allocates progress status categories at the end of each year, taking into account a student's results in all units taken in that year.

Undergraduates (pre-2012 courses)

Satisfactory progress

  • Satisfactory progress is when:
    a)    in a calendar year, you pass units to at least half the total value of units you are enrolled in, and
    b)    you do not fail the same unit twice

  • If you make satisfactory progress, you will be assigned the progress status of 'good standing'.

  • If you do not make satisfactory progress, you will have 'unsatisfactory progress' recorded on your academic record and may be assigned one of the following by the Faculty:
    • On Probation
      • for failing a unit twice: your future enrolment in the semester in which the unit is repeated must be restricted to 18 points only;
      • for failing more units than you have passed in a calendar year but are enrolled for the first time at this university gaining a weighted average mark of at least 30% over units in which you are enrolled: your enrolment in the following year must be restricted to 36 points only (18 points per semester).
    • Suspended
      • for failing more units than you have passed in a calendar year for the first or second time: you will not be permitted to re-enrol in the course for a period of 12 months.
    • Excluded
      • for failing more units than you have passed in a calendar year for the third time: you will not be permitted to re-enrol in the course.

Postgraduates (pre-2012 courses)

Satisfactory progress

  • To make satisfactory progress in a calendar year, you must not fail units to the value of more than 12 points of the last 48 points undertaken or fail the same unit twice.

  • If you make satisfactory progress, you will be assigned the progress status of 'good standing'.

  • If you do not make satisfactory progress, you will have 'unsatisfactory progress' recorded on your academic record and may be assigned one of the following by the Faculty:
    • Suspended
      • when a student has failed to make satisfactory progress: you will not be permitted to re-enrol in the course for a period of 12 months.
    • On Probation
      • If you are enrolled for the first time in a postgraduate course in this University and have
        1. not failed units to a value greater than 18 points in your first year;
        2. not failed units to a value greater than 6 points in the second semester;
        3. gained a weighted average of at least 30 per cent in the units in which you remain enrolled after the final date for withdrawal without academic penalty:
        your enrolment in the following year must be restricted to 36 points (18 points per semester).

Appeals

For information on appealing your progress status or the opportunity to show cause, please check the Faculty's exams, appeals and policies page.
