Prospective Postgraduate Research Awards

Further information

Postgraduate research candidates, who travel to UWA from outside the State, may be eligible to recoup travel and accommodation costs.

Prospective Postgraduate Research Awards scheme helps recruit top quality postgraduate research students by funding their visits to the University. Students from India and China are given priority, but funds could be used to bring candidates from other parts of Australia or from South and South-East Asia.

Travel and accommodation costs of up to $2000 per applicant are reimbursed when proof of expenditure is produced (conditions apply).

Eligible recipients

Visitors to UWA from outside Western Australia, with prospects for undertaking postgraduate research degrees and sponsored by a Faculty member or a member of the Centre for Water Research. Such students include those visiting to discuss possible postgraduate research, visiting student interns and summer vacation scholars.

Restrictions

Reimbursement is based on a first-come first-served basis. Some $115,000 is available over three years. There is a cap on total expenditure of $50,000 in any given year. On reaching this cap, advice will be forwarded to the Postgraduate Scholarships Committee as soon as possible. Payments from the scheme related to a single centre or research group are capped at $30,000 over the life of the scheme. Up to ten awards each year may be made to Indian visiting students as part of the Faculty's contribution to the India Initiative.

Procedure

Step one

Students contact the Associate Dean (Research), who forwards the email to an appropriate member of the Faculty's Postgraduate Scholarships Committee.

Step two

The committee member determines whether to extend an invitation to the student and either act as sponsor or arrange for a suitable replacement (for example, a prospective supervisor). For the purposes of the ten awards allocated as part of the India Initiative, Professor Hema Sharda acts as sponsor and must give approval.

Step three

The sponsor sends a memo to the Associate Dean (Research), including:

  • the name of the candidate
  • country/institution of origin
  • proof of expenditure (including a copy of the Project Grant transaction report).
  • project grant number for reimbursement.
  • basis of the visit, for example
    • prospective student
    • visiting intern
    • summer scholar

Step four

Please note that the Associate Dean (Research) will not be directly reimbursing awardees. The Dean's office will transfer the funds to the sponsor who then forwards a cheque to the awardee.

This scheme will be reviewed annually.
