Centres and Institutes

In addition to research being mainly conducted within the 6 strategic themes, a large amount of research is also being conducted within the centres of the Faculty, as well as UWA institutes and affiliated centres.

Faculty Centres

Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG)

The Australian Centre for Geomechanics is a not-for-profit mining centre which undertakes research, education and training activities in the geomechanics disciplines to provide industry with the necessary tools and knowledge to ensure that safety is not simply a top priority on par with productivity, but rather an ethic that guides everything.

Centre for Energy

The Centre for Energy is an internationally reputable research facility in fuels, energy and sustainable development. The Centre's overall aim is to develop new knowledge and advanced technologies for efficient, effective and environmentally friendly utilisation of fuels and energy in the resources industries.

Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS)

The Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems provides solutions to worldwide offshore foundation needs by providing highly sophisticated modelling and experimental facilities and offering the services of internationally recognised researchers and consulting engineers.

Centre for the Mathematics of Symmetry and Computation (CMSC)

The Centre for the Mathematics of Symmetry and Computation provides a focus for mathematical research and research training in the areas of group theory, combinatorics and computation, to give mathematics the increased visibility it deserves.

Centre for Software Practice (CSP)

The Centre for Software Practice produces cutting edge and efficient applications, web and print design services, and is dedicated to the passing on of knowledge through offering practicum opportunities to students. The Centre is staffed by UWA graduates and students bringing innovative ideas and enthusiasm to every project that is taken on.

Pawsey at UWA
Supercomputer

Pawsey at UWA (formerly iVEC@UWA)  is a facility of iVEC on the UWA campus. The Facility hosts infrastructure including high performance computing, visualisation, conferencing room and high end workstations. Staff expertise and services include eResearch, visualisation, parallel programming, collaborative tools and video production. The Facility acts as an interface between UWA users and Pawsey, assisting UWA staff and students access similar or additional resources at the other Pawsey Facilities.

The Institute has positioned itself as industry’s foremost, trusted and independent research partner to get the best out of mining in our resource rich State.

UWA Oceans Institute

The UWA Oceans Institute brings together the strength of UWA’s marine researchers into a multidisciplinary, integrated research focus. The goal is to capitalise on UWA’s existing research strengths – in areas such as oceanography, ecology, engineering, resource management, and governance – and utilise them to deliver Ocean Solutions for Humanity’s Grand Challenges.

The UWA Institute of Agriculture

The UWA Institute of Agriculture is committed to promoting sustainable productive agriculture for a growing world. We coordinate the teaching, graduate and postgraduate training, research and agribusiness activities, with integrated activities related to agriculture, land and water management, rural economy, policy and development, food and health.

CRC for Water Sensitive Cities
CRC WSC

The Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities (CRCWSC) brings together inter-disciplinary research expertise and thought-leadership from Australia, Singapore, Denmark and the Netherlands to address current urban water management challenges facing Australia’s cities and towns. The Perth hub is situated at The University of Western Australia.

Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis

The Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis enables research excellence by providing world class microscopy and microanalysis facilities and expertise to publicly funded researchers and industry.

Co-operative Education for Enterprise Development (CEED)

CEED (Co-operative Education for Enterprise Development) is a formal program designed to link the abilities and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students with research and development needs of progressive organisations within the wider community. The CEED program at UWA gives access to any discipline within the University.

Western Australian Marine Science Institute (WAMSI)

The Western Australian Marine Science Institution is establishing a leading research capability, underpining the conservation and sustainable management of the State of Western Australia’s marine environment and resources. The Institution is building upon the State’s already strong marine science capacity to create a world class science Institution to provide economic, social and environmental benefits to the State of Western Australia.
