Advanced Sensing Technologies

The AST group’s goal is to enable the next generation of sensing technologies needed to solve remote operational challenges, with a focus on agriculture, environment, infrastructure and asset health monitoring, mining resource exploration, off-shore drilling, and airborne remote sensing.

Novel sensor materials and material systems.

Novel composite materials and materials systems provide sensor capabilities previously unseen. Our research into novel materials will help improve sensitivity and operational range of existing sensor technologies.

Cutting-edge sensor devices and technologies

Our work is central to the worldwide microtechnology revolution. Our research is creating sensor technologies as thin a human hair, can withstand amazing shocks and vibrations, consume almost no power, and capable of being deployed in harsh environments.

Real-world applications

The sensor technologies being developed from the outset to have real-world applications. As an engineering research group, low cost and real-world operability is a a key motivation of our sensor research.

 

The ability to sense is fundamental to engineering operations, scientific exploration, and society wellbeing. Modern intelligent systems often integrate a range of sensors, distributed over a wide area, to perform and control operational tasks. As such, there is a great need for innovative sensing techniques as well as innovative application of sensors.

Our goal is to enable the next generation of sensing technologies needed to solve remote operational challenges, with a particular focus on agriculture, environment, infrastructure and asset health monitoring, mining resource exploration, off-shore drilling, and airborne remote sensing. The group brings together a community of researchers with key expertise in materials engineering, optics, microelectronics, systems engineering, signal processing, and networks. The group’s wide-ranging and multidisciplinary capabilities span the sensing arena, from materials for sensor fabrication, through sensors of fundamental parameters, sensors of complex parameters, sensor readouts and data analysis, to networking sensors into intelligent arrays.

We work to develop reliable, economical sensing technologies, with sufficient spatial and temporal resolution, appropriate for the operational environment. Our sensor projects range from sensor materials research and development, sensor physics and sensor device development. Moving beyond the sensing task, our research also looks at how sensor outputs can be used to provide valuable informational stimulus to fulfil a practical task. We examine intelligent processing of sensor data and data reduction techniques in order to achieve the simplest, lowest cost, and most practical sensing solution for a given set of applications.
