Brett Mayers

Bachelor of Science (Physics)/ Bachelor of Engineering with First Class Honours in Electrical Engineering, 1995

I started work as an Electrical Engineer at Process Control Technology in Perth. I was soon working on the Electrical and Instrument design for an off-shore oil and gas platform.

As a graduate engineer, one of my tasks involved building a database in Microsoft Access to track the instrument index and produce instrument data sheets. In 1998 I moved to London to take up a contract position as an Access database developer for Bechtel, working in the Business Management section on a major oil refinery project. This two-week rolling contract lasted two years, during which time I came up to speed with Access, Visual Basic, and relational databases in general.

In Ireland, I found more contract work as a Visual Basic developer for Royal and SunAlliance, building quotation systems for various insurance products. I also completed a one-year contract with Zurich Bank, and finally took up aposition with JPMorgan, Dublin, in the Analytics department of Structured Finance.

I had never planned to live overseas, but having done so I would never have it any other way. Even though I am no longer an Engineer, the courses I studied and the skills I picked up at UWA opened doors all around the world.
