Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering)

CEO, Dreamfit

I began studying Civil Engineering, but quickly discovered the course wasn’t for me.

After trialling Electrical Engineering, I finally found my niche in UWA’s Mechanical Engineering course. My third and fourth year projects gave me the opportunity to develop a hand-controlled motorcycle for a paraplegic.

The motorcycle project received heaps of media attention and people with disabilities started contacting me asking for help to fulfil their dreams. Dreamfit was born — an organisation designing and re-engineering recreational equipment for people with disabilities.

Dreamfit has since evolved into a charity called the Dreamfit Foundation of which I am now the CEO. My connection to UWA has continued through Dreamfit’s partnership with UWA. Engineering students can be involved in a range of Dreamfit’s unique projects whilst receiving course credit for their work. It is a win-win situation for everyone concerned. The students gain vital practical industry experience under the guidance of mentors whilst helping people with disabilities to live their dreams.

I have great memories of my time at UWA; two incredible experiences that I will never forget are the first year fresher camp and the Warman Design Challenge.

One of the great aspects of UWA’s Science and Engineering degrees is the flexibility of the courses. I also personally think that Science and Engineering graduates have a really broad range of career prospects post-graduation. You just need to have an open mind to all the exciting possibilities that are out there waiting for you to explore.
