Girls in Engineering Day at UWA

On Thursday 2 July, 175 female students from 9 of the GiE partner schools came to UWA for a day of engineering inspired activities. The girls rotated through 3 or 4 different activities which included:

  • How to solve a Rubik’s cube, which teaches problem solving, patience and persistence and helps develop spatial visualisation and memory
  • Bridge building, an activity delivered by Engineers Without Boarders (EWB)
  • Constructing a package from limited material that will protect an egg which will be dropped from a height, an activity delivered by University Engineers Club (UEC)
  • Programming robots, an activity delivered by Robogals
  • Speed Networking, where groups of students were given 5 minutes to talk to 2 current engineering students, 2 UWA engineering academics and 2 professional Rio Tinto engineers

The activities were designed to introduce the students to the different areas of engineering and to excite them about a possible career in engineering. It was also an excellent opportunity for the students to experience the university campus and meet current engineering students and professional engineers. There were 15 UWA engineering students, 2 UWA engineering academics, 4 Aspire UWA staff and 5 Rio Tinto engineers that helped on the day, running activities, leading groups of students to their activities or facilitating the general operation of the day.

Students were asked to provide feedback about their favourite activity and 32% said it was Rubiks Cube, 23% for UEC, 17% for Speed Networking, 15% for EWB, 9% for Robogals and 4% had no preference. The next GiE Day at UWA is due to occur in November, where 20 girls from each of the 11 schools in Years 7 & 8 will be invited onto campus to participate in engineering inspired activities.

We would like to acknowledge and thank Rio Tinto for their support.
